Chicago, South Shore
& South Bend
The South Shore, America's
last interurban, operates from downtown Chicago to South Bend, Indiana
- a distance of about 90 miles. None of the older equipment shown
here is operating today. All new passenger equipment from Japan has
been supplied by NICTD and METRA commuter agencies, and all freight has
been dieselized. Much of the passenger equipment exists today in
railroad museums, along with two of the "Little Joe" freight locos; one
at the Illinois Railway Museum (pictured below, and the other at the B&O
museum in Baltimore.
As usual, my thanks to Jerry
Appleman, Joe Testagrose, Ken Josephson, Bill Volkmer, Bob Redden and others
who have supplied the fine pictures for this page.
