District of Columbia
D.C. Transit
Pre-PCC St. Louis car #1053.
On the Route 72 line which served Georgia Ave. and 7th St.
This was one of 20 cars ordered by Capital Transit Co., DC Transit’s predecessor,
in 1935, from Brill and St. Louis. It eventually wound up at National Capital
Trolley Museum, only to be destroyed by a carbarn fire. It occurred
in the early morning hours Sunday, Sept. 28, 2003, destroying eight trolleys
and their barn. The fire was of unknown origin.
This photo was taken at
4th & Butternut NW which was a short turn on the 7th St. line leaving
7th at Walter Reed Hospital and operating over to the B&O Silver Spring
Station. The present day Silver Spring Metro station is not far from
this location.
