The reason that you see
only low numbered sowbellies on the D line is that the four-motor cars
were numbered below 100 (this is a generalization, however). The
D line was quite hilly on the west side, including the murderous hill on
5th from Olive to Grand, so four-motor
cars were really required.
(Most of the) high numbered sowbellies were two-motor cars, and worked
suitably level lines such as the V (except for that line's murderous hill
from Washington to Venice Blvd...what a sight to see the two motor sows
and standards try that hill, as it was a good deal longer than the 5th
St. hill)
