Los Angeles Railway
1402 on Route H
1947
Ah, a picture at the world-famed
H line dogleg! The car, eastbound here, is just entering the private
right-of-way pictured in the shot of the 1400 uploaded just before this
one. The slide says Los Angeles Transit Lines, but the colors scream
LOS ANGELES RAILWAY.
This picture gives a good
idea of the overhang of the cars on turns (you can imagine if it were a
really sharp one) and also of how large the cars seemed relative to the
track gauge. Besides LARy, the only other systems I remember as having
had 3'6" gauge were in Portland and Denver. For those unfortunate
enough not to have seen European traction or narrow gauge systems, the
gauge is close to meter gauge (which is why the cars were able to go to
Korea without much work on the trucks). Many of the cars that did not go
to Korea or to the Terminal Island scrap pile were unceremoniously dumped
into the sea off Redondo Beach, to stimulate coral and fish growth.
The ghosts at the Redondo Pavilion were weeping.
