2601 at Orange Empire Railway
Museum
Perris CA
2601 was one of two experimental,
lightweight, center door cars built in the late 1920s. 2601 had Westinghouse
control, 2602 had GE. They were supposed to be the first of a new
breed of car, but the Great Depression took care of that. They had
automatic accelleration controllers and variable load brakes, and handled
much differently than any of the other cars. (I know how they handled,
because in the days of fantrips that I rode, I often got to operate the
cars, as did many other riders. Those LATL motormen were generous
with their operating space). They had faux leather seats, were low,
rode lazily, and like the 2501 stayed on the 7
line, for the same reason.
