Montreal Tramways
An 11-Mountain line car
is at the summit loop atop Mount Royal. It will turn here to go back down
the east side of the mountain to the loop at Park Avenue and Boulevard
Mont Royal. The line was completely on private right-of-way, reached a
height of 670 feet above sea level, and featured a 337-foot tunnel. Today
a road follows the streetcar right-of-way. Ironically, it’s named after
the Montreal Mayor most opposed to any kind of road through the mountain
park, the late Camilien Houde. Frederick Law Olmstead, who was also responsible
for New York City’s Central Park, designed the park itself.
